Me and my G. We’ve travelled many paths together. So it was good to get out and reflect on the last year and all that it has brought.
After a number of false starts (I think at least 50% of the pathways were closed for work/farming) we managed to snake our way through the grounds by joining up numerous remaining tracks. The first took us along the River Esk which was red from the stone silt (we thought), the next around the House itself (where Bonnie Prince Charlie once stayed), a route through the forest (where we spotted some deer), a muddy path back down to the bottom and a final loop around the Snowdrop Garden before locating the car park.
I’ve been to Dalkeith Park many times – when the kids were little to Fort Douglas, to the restaurant for lunch, to the shop for Christmas shopping and to the cafe for coffee. And for all that I miss all that, there’s something very freeing about just walking, with a friend, without distraction.
