A Mother’s Day Gift

Better than any Co-op card or Tesco flowers, a walk in the sunshine with my boy.

We headed off to the start point just outside Stenton on a glorious, textbook spring day. To Woodhall Dean, an ancient woodland dominated by sessile oak. It sits right in the middle of open Lammermuir countryside so felt like stepping into our own little world for a couple of hours.

We spent the first part of the walk hunting for adders following the path alongside the river before heading to higher ground with views across the hills. We stopped to comment on a small copse of trees which looked like a group of friends hugging each other in a circle. We both felt the need to join in so climbed underneath to the centre of the huddle. Then looped back around and decided to take the path less travelled on the way back which led to a sideways scramble down to the water and a crawl up the other side.

Isn’t it amazing how the teenager transforms when taken from his usual habitat. One of those days to capture in the memory bank, in the knowledge that he won’t be 13 for long…
