Plan B.
Plan A was a well planned walk up Meikle Says Law in the Lammermuirs but that was scuppered by roadworks on the only route to the start point. So a quick check of alternative routes in the area and I discovered Gifford Community Woodland – 2 woodlands (Speedy and Fawn) purchased by the community in 2017 (I imagine to protect against house building which has overtaken East Lothian).
A narrow, meandering path leads through them both and out to the fields beyond. As nice a walk as it was, I was frustrated not being able to cross Colstoun Water and get up to Weird’s Wood (I think I just wanted to go there because of the name) no matter how hard I tried so was a bit fed up by the time I made it almost back to the start. Especially since Bella wasn’t in the mood for much walking so was being pulled along like a dog shaped sledge most of the way.
However, I decided to add on a small circuit around Broadwoodside at the end which soon cheered me up. The owners of the farmhouse (the Dalrymples) have turned the mostly derelict buildings into a beautiful home and gardens. And to make the surrounding landscape more interesting have added in Jupiter Artland type sculptures and points of interest around the pathways. The first sign of this was a golden hare, closely followed by a couple of white porcelain birds on a ruined portico, the head of Holloway, a sphere in an ice crusher, a sculpted hand and all finished off with a stop sign. Stop worrying.
So I did.
