Penicuik to Dalkeith Walkway

As the hills are still covered in remaining snow and the fields are muddy and soggy we decided to play it safe and head down a sheltered railway walkway. Described as a route where you could enjoy ‘the spectacular landscapes and visitor attractions of the county’ we had fairly high expectations. The walk started well heading down a wooded walk alongside the River Esk. But pretty soon the landscape changed. Either housing has been built up around the walkway or the definition of ‘visitor attraction’ is an industrial estate. It continued like this for most of the way. At one point we played ‘spot something beautiful’. The best we could come up with was some moss on a tree. The final stretch was a race to see how quickly we could get to the car.

Snow covered hills and muddy fields await.
