This time last year we were having a ball in Italy with fresh snow, and rosé wine and were supposed to be doing the same this year. Fresh snow was still on the agenda but a solo walk would have to suffice.
Have pretty much run out of routes in the local area (every route has to be different) but a friend told me about one I’d missed across the back of NB to Whitekirk. So off I set. Up through the usual Lodge Grounds, across the Rugby pitches and along past Tesco – none of which looked usual covered in crisp, pure white snow. Even the Bass Rock was whiter than it’s usual white bird dropping self.
Walking south towards the sun in the snow was blindingly beautiful – although kicking myself to have forgotten my sunglasses. I did manage to make out 2 white swans sitting in the middle of a field in the snow.
After making it over Whitekirk Hill and down into Whitekirk itself, I had planned on walking east and cutting back over the John Muir Way but the roads were covered in snow, there were no cars in sight and it was way too beautiful a day to head for home. So I just kept walking. And walking. Eventually turning back in towards NB from Kingston.
I finished off with a visit to the beach – it’s not often you see the beach covered in snow – and a wander back through the sledgers trying, unsuccessfully, to spot Rhys on his canoe.
15 miles and I could have kept on walking…
