Haddington to Gifford loop – Snow Walk #2

I’ve been itching to get back out into the Lammermuir Hills but with the snow getting thicker by the day the closest it felt safe to attempt was the flatter ground of Haddington nearby. Turned out even that was a push.

The path was tricky to find hidden under the snow and as most of it was untouched, it was heavy on the legs to navigate. I couldn’t resist the perfect expanse of one of the virgin snow fields and lay down to rest, enjoy the sun and make a snow angel. Didn’t last long though as I could feel the trickle of ice seeping through the back of my jacket.

After passing through lots of lovely dells, villages and woodlands along the way (which must be idyllic in the summer), I arrived at the half way point feeling like I’d walked 15 miles when in fact I’d managed 6. The walk back was way easier on the legs. The sun was out and after a stop for lunch under the trees, a well trodden path took me through woodland up the side of a river to connect back to Haddington.

I don’t imagine the snow will be here for long so has been a real treat to be properly out in it and make the most of it. Although my weather beaten face and aching legs may not agree.

Nearly 400 miles down. Heading for the final 100.
