Edinburgh city centre part II. After the riches of the New Town, it was time to visit the underbelly of Edinburgh. Although with the injection of the tourist dollar, it’s not so poor these days.
We started with a walk across the Meadows and a visit to Greyfriars Kirkyard – final resting place of John Gray where Greyfriars Bobby sat for 14 years. Some pretty impressive grave stones/mausoleums. Before heading down into the bowels of the Grassmarket where all was quiet. We said a quick hello to Graeme’s first flat at Cordiner’s Land before heading to the Castle Esplanade and a view over the rooftops.
The walk down the Royal Mile was different from the usual pinballing through the crowds trying to get from A to B without bumping into a floating yoda. Instead we took our time actually investigating the closes along its length. It’s easy to imagine how easily diseases like the plague spread through the narrow spaces many years ago. Not unlike the Covid hotspots of today.
A final loop around the Scottish Parliament, Holyrood, Arthurs Seat and Dynamic Earth and we headed back to our start point. I can see why tourists love our city so much – all of these amazing sights literally within a square mile.
