Happy Birthday Mum

76 today. After a couple of glasses of bucks fizz and an online visit to the Conran to Quant exhibition at The Dovecot we decided to take a walk around Corstorphine.

We cut across the Gyle park (which barely resembles the large, empty expanse of grass it used to be) on to the old Corstorphine High Street and to my old primary school. My memory is of this huge, sprawling old building with doors the size of giants and a playground which went on for ever. I guess it’s shrunk.

Down through St Margaret’s Park where sports day was held every year. Not much sport going on today as the football pitch seems to have turned into a swimming pool.

And it must be the day of The Dovecot. As tucked away at the bottom of the park is the original Dovecot studios – named after the pretty obvious actual Dovecot in the garden – and where the Infirmary Street Dovecot takes its name from.

And from a building which has been there for over 400 years, to one which has unfortunately now gone, after a fire in 2013. The Corstorphine Community Centre – scene of the first ‘Corrie raves’.

We wandered up to the main road and zig zagged our way across the top of Corstorphine to Craigs Road, home of Craigmount High School and my Uncle Ronnie and Auntie Vera. We couldn’t pass without saying a quick hello. And after a visit up the ‘back path’ to our old house at the top of the hill, we headed for home. And a couple more glasses of champagne with some birthday cake.
