Sounds like somewhere Peter Rabbit from a Beatrix Potter story might hang out. But is actually an area of woodland a couple of miles from Haddington. Not quite so romantic.
After a bit of a challenge to find the start point (East Lothian’s new housing continues to take over the landscape), we set off through the very muddy fields. Most of the paths were waterlogged so we spent a fair bit of time searching for somewhere dry to place our feet. After an hour or so of sludging, we passed through Gladsmuir (not sure how glad it is) and arrived at Butterdean.
A lovely old woodland with easy paths to navigate. Although at only 100 acres it didn’t take long to make it from end to end. There’s something very grounding about being surrounded by trees which have been alive for longer than us. The weather was beginning to turn so we hot footed it back to our start point.
As we were walking back up the country roads, I commented that we hadn’t seen any wildlife on our travels – at the very least a squirrel would have been nice. As I finished uttering the sentence, out popped not one but 3 in a row. The squirrel gods were looking down.
