Binning Wood & Ravensheugh

Binning Wood – a pretty spiritual place as it’s a functioning ‘natural’ burial site so is covered in graves and floral memorials. I swear you can feel the presence of souls in the air.

It’s also very beautiful on a crisp winter day with snow on the ground. We headed straight up through the woods and popped out the other end. And were greeted with the sight of a full herd of deer – I wasn’t quick enough to catch the stare the stag gave us across the field before all of them (we reckoned about 16) scarpered off.

Just as we made it to the cover of Brownrig Wood, the sky turned dark and the snow came down. The sound (or lack of it) inside a woodland whilst the snow falls is always a pleasure.

After a sheltered walk through the woods we made it up over the dunes to the beach. And were just about blown back into them again. The North Sea and it’s associated winds were in full force. After a slight misadventure crossing an estuary just off the beach where I ended up knee deep in water, we turned back into the tranquil protection of the trees.

A perfect winter’s day adventure.
