Another icy walk but Gran had her yaktrax on so off we set. Down to the Water of Leith from the Modern Art Gallery. I walked the Water of Leith in the autumn last year but was so busy peering at Antony Gormlay’s sculpture of a man (one of 6 to be installed along the length of the Water of Leith), that I missed the beautiful engravings about grief. Maybe I was supposed to miss them as that meant that I read them for the first time with my mum.
If I should leave you whom I love, to go along the silent way, grieve not, nor speak to me with tears, but laugh and talk of me as if I were beside you here.
So we walked to Dean Village and talked about the night my mum and dad danced at a ceilidh amongst the washing poles in the village courtyard. Then headed along St Stephen’s Street and up to the New Town. It was lovely to take the time to look at the buildings, windows and doorways. And to appreciate the space – the width of streets, the size of the gardens, the height of the houses. Money = space.
We made our way to Charlotte Square which was spookily deserted then headed along William Street (no more Bert’s Bar which dad loved – always a pie and a pint man) before looping back round to Belgrave Crescent. Just need a little lottery win to afford a pied a terre there overlooking Belgrave Gardens and the Water of Leith.

Another great day out with my beautiful daughter , memories of walks with Bill, and dancing ! I have lived in Edinburgh all my life ,walked the streets of the New Town delivering the mail on my first job and still I love Edinburgh. A very lucky lady. Thank you x
