Garleton Hills

First walk of 2021. And in true Scottish style, 4 seasons in an hour. It was snowing/hailing when I arrived in Athelstaneford so I sat in the car and enjoyed the peace for a while (everybody in one house, all the time, has its limits). It soon stopped and I headed off across the field behind the school. I thought I was walking the Garleton Hills overlooking the Firth of Forth but turns out the route faces the opposite direction towards Traprain Law and the Lammermuirs.

It was cold, muddy and windy but felt strangely therapeutic being battered by the elements. I headed up past the remains of Barnes Castle and to the top of the hill where once again the heavens opened and the icy rain came down. I tried to shelter in a derelict brick building on top of the hill but without a roof it didn’t quite work out…

As soon as it cleared, I headed back the way I came. The sun came out and split the sky open.
