Spartleton Hill

The time between Christmas and New Year – otherwise known as Twixtmas, Chrimbo Limbo, The Witching Week…

What better way to spend it than a walk up a hill with 2 gorgeous girls. And we picked a good day. There was not a cloud in the sky and everywhere was covered in a dusting of snow. Enough of it to look magical but not so much that those of us without snow feet could still, just about, make it round.

The start point was the same as my last walk but the route took us up and out the other side of the reservoir. Past the remains of Gamelshiel Castle – walls that have stood there for over 700 years – then onwards to the top of Spartleton Hill with views in all directions including Crystal Rig wind farm. Instead of heading back the way we’d come we decided to take a detour and walk parallel to the reservoir along the hilltops. Bathed in winter sun, walking along crackling snow and ice, all was going to plan until we had to clamber over a burn. Bella point blank refused and had to be carried across like the two tonne princess she is.

The last stretch took us to a slightly different world – a narrow passage with an old wall and stream running down to meet the reservoir at the bottom. And after a final skirt around the reservoir, we were back at the car park.

I can’t think of many more positive ways to end what has been one of the most difficult of years.
