Winter has arrived. With a chill wind blowing and the sun sitting low on the horizon line, we set off back towards the coastal path. On hitting the cliff tops we stopped to look at the beach below. I peered down but couldn’t quite work out what I was looking at – hundreds of little white dashes all over the sand … seals … mother seals, baby seals, daddy seals … lots and lots of them. Turns out it’s breeding season. The beach they were gathered on was protected on both sides and behind by huge cliffs so definitely a good spot for seal shenanigans.
The rest of this route was a clifftop rollercoaster. Every time we meandered down a slope we were met with a scrambling climb at the other side.
St Abb’s Head and Nature Reserve were always in our eye line. Just before our arrival the winter weather turned to hail?! But it soon cleared as we passed some more seals, headed up on to see St Abb’s Head Lighthouse and round the very steep and rugged coastal path to come down into the town. Invigorating.
