NOT The West Highland Way

So the plan this weekend was to tackle the first couple of stages of The West Highland Way. But sadly (due to travel restrictions and our accommodation closing its doors) it was not to be. Little did we know the gem of a walk we would be rewarded with as an alternative.

The John Muir Link connects the end of the John Muir Way in Dunbar with the beginning of the Southern Upland Way/Berwickshire Coastal Walk. It’s a stunning part of the coastline you can really only access if you walk. And the weather. Not a cloud in the sky, just a microlight.

We spent most of the day in awe.

The walk was broken up with a good old neb around Barns Ness Lighthouse (which you can rent for holidays) and a lot of chat about Torness Power Station – the sheer scale and weight of it, the colour of it (an attempt to merge it into the sky), the sparkly solar panels (Shirley was drawn to them like a magpie), the hundreds of massive concrete jacks (proper name Dolos) defending it against the sea, the lifespan of Torness itself (supposed to be 30 years although recently extended) and the general Russian/Bond vibes.

The final part of the walk took us along beaches, through woodland, over clifftops and back under the mainline railway south to Cockburnspath.

Just in time to catch the sun going down on the drive home. I just had to stop for a shot of Berwick Law.
