Haddington to North Berwick

Monday morning. After a week of school holidays and a week of home schooling due to a classmate’s positive test for Covid, it felt good to be dropped off in Haddington on my own with nothing to do except put one foot in front of the other for a few hours.

Taking 5 minutes to actually stop and look at Haddington for the first time. There’s a goat in the middle of the High Street which I’d never paid any attention to before (Haddington’s emblem of prosperity) and the Nungate bridge which is nearly 1000 years old and was once the scene of the town’s executions – the hanging hook is still there to see.

I headed off down the Tyne (hard to get Gazza out my head when I type that) to East Linton. The ruins of Hailes Castle were a dramatic interruption but not as much as the sight of the A1 crossing above my head. Was an interesting feeling standing by a river with nobody around underneath one of the busiest roads in Scotland. Pretty powerful juxtaposition of the bridge and nature.

After a short stop in East Linton it was back up the John Muir Way to home. North Berwick Law looking beautiful in the afternoon sun.
