The final leg of the John Muir Way

Drum roll … the journey from the West of Scotland to the East is complete. I used to complain that the drive to Glasgow was too long, not sure I can quite wrap my head around the fact I’ve now walked it. Adding in a few miles of diversions on the JMW and walks to train stations/bus stops along the way with an additional walk down The Water of Leith, the total distance my feet have travelled as part of this challenge now sits at 160 miles. Only 340 to go…

So back to the final day of the John Muir Way. Felt very strange heading out of my front door and being less than a minute from the nearest John Muir Way signpost. Joined by the young team, we set off heading firstly to East Linton. It’s a walk I’ve done on many occasions but today was definitely the soggiest. It’s been pretty special watching Summer disappear, Autumn come in and head out again as I’ve crossed the country. Winter is definitely around the corner.

After a quick stop to warm up at East Linton we headed out on the final stretch to Dunbar. And as if by magic, a rainbow appeared, the clouds lifted and we were bathed in sunshine. Even the geese were delighted.

Coming around Belhaven Bay and following the cliffside path into Dunbar was truly glorious. And there at the end to meet me (with possibly the first bunch of flowers he’s ever bought me), was my big bruv and his gorgeous girls.

I officially finished at John Muir’s Birthplace with the first certificate I think I’ve received since I swam the width of the swimming pool as a kid. This was followed by an unofficial dip of our feet in the North Sea which nearly resulted in mum being swept away to Denmark.
