Whilst I am aiming for the end of the John Muir Way, I couldn’t say no to a suggestion from one of my loveliest friends to combine art and a walk on a sunny day down the length of the Water of Leith.
Starting off at Balerno we soon made it to Colinton Tunnel. Recently re-painted by over 500 local people with the words from Robert Louis Stevenson’s poem ‘From a Railway Carriage’ – a description of a child’s first rail journey. I love a bit of graffiti, of art amongst nature, so we stayed and noseyed for a while.
Then we headed down to re-trace my John Muir Way footsteps to the point where the Water of Leith and the Union Canal cross. Passed Murrayfield Ice Rink (where I am pretty sure I saw Grace Jones play in the 1980s but might have imagined that) and down to the beautiful Dean Village. Finished off with a bit of Antony Gormley. Bliss.
Forgot to turn Strava off when I got in the car. Official distance – 12 miles.
