Well they do say there’s no such thing as bad weather, just unsuitable clothing. So on went the suitable clothing for a walk on a very dreich day. We started where we left off at The Meadows – it broke my heart to see Summerhall, usually so full of energy and life, closed and empty.
We headed off up and round the Commie pool (memories of Brattisani’s pokes of chips and Stingray slides) and across the back of one of my favourite places in the world, Arthur’s Seat.
Then to somewhere new. Tucked away down an unassuming opening is the Innocent Railway path (so called because the trains were originally pulled by horses) – Edinburgh’s first railway line and the UK’s first underground railway line. Every day’s a school day. The pathway provided shelter from the rain as we made our way out of Edinburgh into East Lothian on to the shores of Musselburgh (which I never normally see as I am stuck in traffic on the High Street).
The two Shirleys in my life came along today. And Shirley NB was with me from start to finish, sharing the battering from the sea, wind and rain as we walked the final stretch into Prestonpans. After a cold, wet wait for the train we made it home. I felt pretty much like Bella looked.
